Farewell Virgin America and Product Differentiation

Alaska Airlines announced that they will be discontinuing the Virgin America brand and product. The VA first class seat was the best standard seat in the USA. I guess United's lame and uncomfortable 737 cabin won't looks so bad now.

I saw the Korean Air 747-8 landing at SFO today and I want to be on that flight. The plane looks graceful and cool as it descends over the bay. I could use my Delta miles (HAHAHAHAHA, right) or my Chase Ultimate Rewards points to snag a seat. Business or First will do.

SPG, Marriott, and Hilton offer a 5th night free when paying with points. This is a great bargain, if you plan on staying 5 nights. It is also beneficial if you are staying 4 nights. Book a 5th night for the end of your stay and you have a guaranteed late check out. Add the Make a Green Choice card (at SPG) for some bonus points. The 5th night also counts for elite status. You are also protected in case of flight issues that could keep you in town an extra night.

New American Airlines Boarding Process

American is trying to make the boarding process less confusing and more depressing. There will be a total of 10 boarding groups. Credit card holders are moved down to Group 5, so that benefit doesn't sound too cool anymore. It does solve the United problem of half the plane being in Group 1 & 2. I was Group 9 on Delta once and it made me sad.

United Airlines announced a new lifetime status level: 1 Parsec Status. Simply fly a parsec to qualify, 19,174,000,000,000 miles is all you need (I'm unsure if United has flown this far in their cumulative history). It's dated and the same product when I flew in 2015. It feels more tired and the TV went from obsolete to antiquated. Unlike American air carriers, British Airways keeps pushing back their 747-400 retirement date. They are like domestic carriers in that they don't update their 747 fleet.

SFO Plane Spotting

The Westin SFO and Aloft SFO have a great park close by for plane spotting. There are benches and a great view of runways 1R, 28L, and 28R. The tower is 120.5 if you have a scanner. I took some pictures while out there last week. The view is great, but shooting jets almost a mile away is difficult with a hand held camera. I did see someone with a tripod and 400mm lens, a better set up than I had. It was still a fun afternoon.

British Airways Club Europe A320

ORY-LHR is a short flight, but it came with the full Club Europe service. I'm glad the flight wasn't longer because the seats are a tight squeeze. The seats are also minimally padded. The meal service was nice and provided the inflight entertainment. The crew was friendly and the trip was nice, but any longer and I would have been sore and bored.
